West Columbia is bordered on the north by the Congaree River and the south by its tributary, the Saluda River. The city is bordered on the east by Lexington County and to the west by Richland County. It is in the Midlands region of South Carolina and is served by Interstate 26 and U.S. Highway 1. As per the 2019 census, the present population is estimated to be 17,998.
West Columbia was established in 1894 as Brookland, but the name was soon changed to West Columbia to avoid confusion with another town in Berkeley County.
